There's a number of things that really impress examiners in the speaking test. Here are 2 of my favourites...
1) Linking words/devices
Remember to use a range of linking words and phrases. Don't keep using the same ones over and over again. Also, try to use more complex structures like relative clauses. These are fabulous ways of stretching your sentences. Not only that, they will help you get more marks in the fluency section of the speaking test.
2) Idioms
It's raining cats and dogs? Not your cup of tea? Well, even if it's not... start learning some great idioms and informal phrases that you can use. These make you sound more natural and the best part is they help you get more marks for Lexical Resource. If you are aiming for a band 7 or above, then you will definitely need to use these as they are in the marking criteria. Learn some vocabulary which is very current and topical. For example, if you're talking about TV, then say you like to 'stream programmes too'.
